Students are expected to take accurate notes (separate from their notes on the speaker himself) then write a discussion summary. The deadline for summaries is the following Friday by 5 p.m.
Students assigned to these summaries will write two-page, single-spaced narrative reports that capture key points of the talk and synthesize important threads and ideas from the discussion. The job of the notetaker will be to accurately capture important ideas from the discussion so that the class will be able to recall the talk and its key points.
By the following Monday morning (after all summaries are turned in to me), Prof. Dufresne will post the submitted summaries -"Discussion" and "Take Away"- on this class blog. Over the next five days, students will have the chance to read the summaries and post critiques, comments, corrections, and questions to help improve the overall accuracy and focus.
Students' contributions to the blog will be considered in the participation portion of their final grade (worth 5%). Students who make little or no contribution over the course of the semester will see that reflected in their participation grade.
Weekly posts will remain open for comment until the next Friday, 10 days after the speaker's talk. At that time, the notetakers will be free to consider some of their classmates' comments and submit revised summaries that may better reflect the talk and the discussion. The deadline for revised summaries will be the following Wednesday, two weeks after the speaker's talk.
These weekly summaries, along with your own notes, will provide essential review materials for the three exams in this course. They will remain available throughout the semester. To refer back to past summaries, be sure to check for the speaker's name under the "Blog Archive".
Any questions about how to post comments to a blog can be directed to Maeve Ryan at maeve.ryan@uconn.edu.
